COOLGEOHEAT II - an Interreg project
Svenskt Geoenergicentrum, together with Borrföretagen, is participating in the INTERREG-ÖKS project COOLGEOHEAT II, which started in April 2024 and will run for three years. COOLGEOHEAT II is a continuation of the previous two-year project COOLGEOHEAT, which was completed in the fall of 2022.
The aim of COOLGEOHEAT II is to increase the production of renewable energy from the ground for collective heating and cooling in the green cities and rural areas of the future. The technology used in the project is thermal networks, known as 5th generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC), also called thermonets. Thermal networks connect individual households' heat pumps to a shared network of uninsulated pipes and energy sources, with the ground acting as a thermal battery. When energy sources are shared and heat can be stored in the ground, the cost per household is reduced compared to individual supply options, which benefits society, consumers, and network owners alike. However, the implementation of thermal networks still faces challenges, including national boundaries and regulations, and a lack of guidelines for dimensioning and design to ensure comfort and security of supply, taking into account varying heating and cooling needs.
The project partners are public and private actors, as well as research institutions in Sweden and Denmark, with expertise in the energy sector. Svenskt Geoenergicentrum participated in COOLGEOHEAT together with Borrföretagen and is now also participating as a partner in COOLGEOHEAT II.
